Eartquakes Essays - Seismology, Earthquake Engineering, Free Essays Eartquakes Earthquakes: Why They Occur And How To Prepare For Them An earthquake is one of the most powerful natural disasters known to man. Earthquakes are so powerful that they can knock down buildings and bridges as well as change river routes and cause landslides. With all the damage earthquakes cause the only way to protect oneself from them is to be prepared and well educated about them. Since they cannot be predicted one must always be prepared for them. Strict building codes in earthquake prone areas also help to minimize the property damage caused during an earthquake. Earthquakes throughout history have caused several millions of deaths as well as severe property damage. Earthquakes are more complex than one may think they are. Earthquakes most often occur near plate boundaries because that is where the tectonic plates meet. As tectonic plates slide past each other they cause tension on one another. After a while there is so much tension on these rocks that they just snap. The sudden break of these rocks send vibrations out in all directions. Soon after the first vibration is sent out a second vibration is sent out called the After shock. Humans can also cause earthquakes in many ways. Injecting fluids into deep well for waste disposal, filling reservoirs with water, and firing underground nuclear test blast, In limited circumstances lead to earthquakes. All these activities increase the strain within the rock near the location of the activities. So that rocks slip and slide along preexisting faults(Microsoft Encarta 2000). Earthquakes can cause a lot of damage. They are strongest near the epicenter. The epicenter is directly above the point that the earths crust snaps. The farther from the epicenter the weaker the vibrations of the earthquake are. That means the area close to the epicenter are going to receive more damage and areas farther from the epicenter are going to receive less damage. As well as distances from the epicenter the type of area an earthquake occurs in has effect on how much damage is caused. Under developed countries seem to suffer much more damage than a developed country. Underdeveloped countries have less strict building codes and are not prepared for natural disaster as well as developed countries are. In underdeveloped countries earthquakes cause much more deaths also. After earthquakes conditions often lead to widespread disease outbreaks. Damage to hospitals, water supply lines, sewage lines, and lack of housing all contribute to the widespread of disease. Developed countries have the same problems but thier strict building codes, emergency forces, and preparedness seem to minimize the damage and death caused by earthquakes. No matter if a person lives in developed or underdeveloped country earthquakes still cause damage. A tsunami is probably the effect of an earthquake. A tsunami is a group of giant sea waves that get bigger and bigger as they get closer to the coast that usually strike without warning. As these giant sea waves come crashing down on the coast they cause servere flooding that drowns a lot of people instantly and cause a lot of property damage. Along with flooding from tsunamis rivers are often rerouted during major earthquakes and flood whole town. After most major earthquakes there are fires. The worst part of fires after an earthquake is that usually broken gas mains cause the fires. If the gas mains are broken usually the water mains are also broken so firefighters have a hard time finding water to put out the fires. Another effect of an earthquake is landslides. Landslides are very dangerous if they occur because most of the time anything in the path of a landslide is destroyed. Earthquakes are very dangerous for a few reasons. First of all they cannot be predicted and second they cannot be stopped. If an earthquake occurs all that can be done is wait it out. That is why everyone must be prepared for an earthquake. The first item that must be learned about an earthquake is that they can occur at any time and any place. Two procedures that must be done in order to prepare for an earthquake is make an earthquake kit and prepare ones home for an earthquake. The basic earthquake kit should include food

Law Enforcement Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1
Law Enforcement - Essay Example 2. A terrorist threat is almost certain to change the role of the state or local law enforcement. This is because they have the best local knowledge about possible modes of attacks and security vulnerabilities that are applicable to their individual areas. In addition, they often have insiders who can tip off alerts. In addition, law enforcement authorities can often incorporate keeping an eye on suspicious movements or persons as part of their local security operations, something that centralized counter-terrorist agencies will find difficult to do. For example the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention act of 2004 (1) made specific provisions for increasing security checks at airports and borders, which is impossible to implement in practice without local law enforcement agencies participating actively. The best way that they can operate is in conjunction with specific anti-terrorist groups, with a designated number of local and state law enforcement officers undertake special training, and work in collaboration with central agencies. For example, Federal Law enforcement Training Centres ( FLECTs) (2) have already been set up specifically to train local and state law enforcement officers to train in counter-terrorism. 3. During the next attack, the state and local law enforcers should be much better prepared with a plan to limit the damages of the attack, an emergency plan to shut off routes of escape or access to perpetrators, carry out on prompt investigations, detain suspects and co-ordinate with agencies outside their jurisdiction. In addition, they would be much better trained to cope with disasters with the help of local emergency and disaster services. 4. If I were the State Director of Law Enforcement, I would keep my forces and systems in high alert, being prepared for all future terrorist incidents. I would set aside a significant

God and Daniel Defoes Robinson Crusoe Essay -- Defoe Robinson Crusoe
Robinson Crusoe and God à As Robinson Crusoe salvages anything useful for his subsistence off of the shipwreck, he alludes to his materialism. "...O Drug!.. what art thou good for, thou art not worth to me, no not the taking off of the ground, one of those knives is worth all this heap, I have no manner of use for thee, e'en remain where thou art, and go to the bottom as a creature whose life is not worth saving... However, upon second thoughts, I took it away..." (Defoe 57) It is easy to take Crusoe's statement literally and dismiss him merely as an ostentatious person; however, Crusoe sees real beauty in the saving hand of God.à The dominant theme in Robinson Crusoeà is that sin has its retribution, but peace can be found through forgiveness and belief.à Young Crusoe's "Original Sin" leads him into a desolate plight.à Crusoe finds strength in God, which he has been reacquainted with while on the shoals of secularism.à Providence prepares Crusoe to escape with the aid of the Spaniards, and also sends an English ship.à Crusoe rises only were all people ought to rise- in thankfulà acknowledgment of the divine mercy. Crusoe spurns his fathers advice and commits what he calls his "Original Sin."à His fathers Philosophy, which is designed to buy man happiness and pleasure in both this life and the next, nevertheless fails to persuade young Crusoe, who finds nothing, but boredom amid the comforts of the middle class.1 "I was sincerely affected with this as indeed who could be otherwise?à And I resolved not to think of going abroad anymore, but to settle at home according to my fathers desire.à But alas! A few days wore it off,... in a few weeks I resolved to run quite away from him." (Defoe 3) .. ...Crusoe's conversion does not go unrequited; as he surrenders to God, the island surrenders to him.à Afterà twenty-eight years on the island, he is able to escape through divine Providence.à The major theme of Robinson Crusoe is that sin leads to punishment, while devotion leads to peace.à Robinson Crusoe is nothing less than a textbook in the appropriate relationships among human beings, culture, and Godà à Works Cited 1 http://www.kirijusto.scifi/defoe.htm 2 http://www.kirijusto.scifi/defoe.htm 3 Zimmerman, Everett.à Defoe And The Novel.à University ofà California Press.à Berkeley, California.à 1975 pg. 36 4 Zimmerman, Everett.à Defoe And The Novel.à University of California Press.à Berkeley, California.à 1975 pg. 37 5 Zimmerman, Everett.à Defoe And the Novel.à à University of California Press.à Berkeley, California.à 1975 pg. 37

International brand equity Essay
This case study is meant to provide a critical evaluation of this research paper on international brand equity in multinational project group. this study tries to find out the scientific quality in its approaches. This study looks into the matter whether, the methodologies used are fine enough to bring out accurate results on the research topic and compare it with the researches done by other researchers on similar topics. If the methodologies used are not appropriate to come out with the real scenario in brand equity cases, the study also provides alternative and appropriate methods that should be used for fulfilling the purpose of this research. Introduction This is a critical review of international brand equity. In this review mentioned about the a particular case study of branded liquor Chivas Regal. Chivas Regal is a premium Scotch whisky produced by Chivas Brothers. It was founded in 1801 in Aberdeen, Scotland. The Chivas brandââ¬â¢s home is Strathisla Distillery at Keith, Moray in Speyside, Scotland. Chivas Regal is one of the good selling premium whiskies in the world, available in more than 200 countries. It is the best selling premium Scotch whisky in Europe and Asia Pacific and is rated one of the worldââ¬â¢s good powerful spirits brands. Chivas Regal is one of the best performing spirits brands globally, with sales having grown by 40% over the last four years. Brand equity is the value that built-up in a brand. It is measured based on how much a customer is aware of the brand and consumption of a particular brand. The value of a companyââ¬â¢s brand equity can be calculated by comparing the expected future revenue from the branded product with the expected future revenue from an equivalent non-branded product. This calculation is at best an approximation. This value can comprise both tangible, functional attributes (e. g. TWICE the cleaning power or HALF the fat) and intangible, emotional attributes (e. g. The brand for people with style and good taste). Brand equity can be positive or negative. Positive brand equity is created by effective promotion and consistently meeting or exceeding customer thoughts. Negative brand equity is usually the result of bad management. The author only saying the positive side. Literature review The author presented international brand equity in a case study method in this method he mentioned meanings of brand equity and measures of brand equity. The author presented this paper with a solid evidence of reference and key words Board equity; Advertising; Globalization; Marketing research; Multinational companies. The Marketing Science Institute (MSI) state that brand equity can be viewed by customersâ⬠â⬠¦as both financial and as a set of favourable associations and behavioursâ⬠(MSI 1989). Aaker (1991) suggests that brand equity consists of brand associations (brand image), brand loyalty, brand awareness, perceived quality, and other brand assets. Aaker (1996)indicates that loyalty is one sufficient importance that other measures, such as perceived quality and associations, can often evaluated based on their ability to influence it. Keller (1993) describes the consumerââ¬â¢s memory as a function of a set of nodes and links of the various associations related to a brand. Perceived quality has been shown to be associated with price premiums, price elasticties, brand usage, and remarkably, stock return (Aaker 1996). Brand awareness reflects the salience of the brand in the customer mind (Faircloth, Capella & Alford 2001). Main argument The author is arguing about the effectiveness of advertising and meaning of brand equity and relationship between the brand proposition and product formulation. The other main arguments are shown below: â⬠¢ Increased diagnostic potential. â⬠¢ Guiding principles established. â⬠¢ Holistic outlook of campaign effects on consumers. â⬠¢ Creating better understanding of the nature of the consumer ââ¬Å"take-outâ⬠from the advertising by using indirect techniques e. g. use of projective and enabling techniques. â⬠¢ Knowledge of how consumers might relate to the brand. â⬠¢ Opportunities to unravel complex responses or ambiguity in answers. This research paper is consumer based brand equity which means that Customer-based brand equity is defined as the differential effect of brand knowledge on consumer response to the marketing of the brand in which brand knowledge is conceptualised, based on an associative network memory model in terms of two components, brand awareness and brand image (Keller 2003). Feldwick (1996) notes there are three meanings of brand equity: Brand value: in accounting terms the value of a brand as an asset that can be broken out on a balance sheet. Brand strength: a measure of the strength of a consumerââ¬â¢s attachment to a brand. Brand description: the set of specific attitudes a consumer has towards a brand. Ambler and Vakratsas (1998) have stated that no single set of measures of performance or ââ¬Å"metricsâ⬠could apply to all firms and that in practice many such measures are related. They suggested some consumer brand equity metrics as: ââ¬Å"Intermediateâ⬠(includes top-line sales, bottom line, awareness, knowledge, relevance, perceived quality etc. ); ââ¬Å"Behaviourâ⬠(loyalty, share of category requirements, number of customers gained and lost, new leads, repurchase rates, direct marketing responses) and ââ¬Å"Competitiveâ⬠(share of market, share of voice, relative/actual/measured quality, relative satisfaction/intention to buy). Clearly, there can be many measures or combination of measures which marketers could decide to include. Indeed, Feldwick has argued that when assessing the health of a person there is no single ââ¬Å"healthâ⬠score but rather a set of measures which are used to qualitatively assess health. Taking this analogy further, we would argue that the measures that are relevant will depend on the circumstances of the person. For instance, their age (product life cycle? ), history and life expectations ââ¬â what could be expected given the environment in which the person has lived (market history, conventions and forecasts) and most importantly their psychological well-being. In the latter case, one might examine the extent to which a person has a set of core values that are ââ¬Å"healthyâ⬠. Are they consistent within themselves and with the communities in which the person lives and works? Is their expression optimal? The parallels with brand essence research and brand building are topics this paper will address in particular. The approach taken in this paper is that building brand equity in marketing rather than accounting terms is about strengthening a brand in the mind and heart of the consumer. To achieve this, marketing research can help define how this might be achieved, screen marketing programmes before they are implemented and then assess their effectiveness once executed. The concept of brand equity is not new. Certain global brands in the drinks market have, for long, been successful as ââ¬Å"global entitiesâ⬠in their own right, projecting strong cultural identities or what they stand for, e. g. Coca Cola and Johnny Walker which had the slogan ââ¬Å"born 1870 and still going strongâ⬠. The best known Seagram brands include Chivas Regal whisky, the Glenlivet malt whisky, Mumm champagne, Martell cognac and Sandeman port and sherry. Better known in the drinks industry for its production and marketing of distilled spirits, wines, coolers, beers, mixers and fruit juices in over 150 countries, Seagram also has investments in the music and entertainment industries. The example of Chivas Regal draws from previous discussion about market research (Nancarrow et al. , 1998). Chivas Regal is Seagramââ¬â¢s definitive luxury Scotch whisky from Strathisla, the oldest operating distillery in Scotland, founded in 1786. From its origins as a whisky consumed by members of the nobility and gentry in Scotland it is now sold across the world to ââ¬Å"discriminating whisky drinkersâ⬠. According to Kapferer (1992), successful brand development should take account of the genetic blueprint and core values of a brand. However, brand building must also consider the more peripheral, often local, attributes of an international brand. Marketers can therefore seek to maximise the appeals of their brands through marketing communication methods in global markets, with these principles in mind. As a premium brand, Seagramââ¬â¢s Chivas Regal is advertised and promoted to be positioned as a luxury brand in the minds of consumers. The positioning and investment in consolidating this have been consistent across countries. The designs of local advertising campaigns in the past, therefore, had to meet specific global brand criteria to maintain consistency in terms of consumer perceptions. The core values of the brand should be fundamental to the creation of the blueprint for all marketing communications. However, while it is one thing to hold the view that core values should represent the essence of a truly global brand which could be ââ¬Å"transportedâ⬠across the world, it is possible that the search for common values may be misunderstood by local management as a search for the lowest common denominator, possibly leading to blandness of approach. At Seagram, global management avoided this by a process of full consultation with their regional and local markets management teams. It is also not always easy for organisations to ensure that their messages to consumers are interpreted by them in the ways in which such organisations had intended. For Seagram it was important to get it right and to deliver advertising messages as effectively as possible to consumers. The ââ¬Å"consultation processesâ⬠with consumers in the pre-testing research on press advertising would minimise the risk of distortion as well as contribute up-to-date information about consumer needs and wants. The author used exploratory method with the use of qualitative research approach. Exploratory research is usually conducted to clarify and define the nature of a problem The author presented in a good way and he mentioned each and every corner of this research paper. He presented with good reference. The author mentioned qualitative techniques. But only the one defects is not a deep paper Author presented with the help of a table and a graph Discussion In this research paper author selected brand is not suitable for this research paper because liquor products are a different category. In my opinion liquor products are addicted products peoples are selecting only in the base of addiction not for branding sense. The author mentioned two type of testing part one is pre-testing and another one is post-testing it shows that communication effect and sales effect Conclusion In this research paper author presented in a different style and different type of approach. Any way this is a good research paper but little bit defects like the author concentrate only a particular brand. In my opinion this brand is not suitable for research of brand equity because alcohol is a product but peoples are buying to the addiction of alcohol. In this research author more concentrate about the technical part and research part. The Fall of the Soviet Union - 1179 Words
The fall of the Soviet Union Before one can understand the fall of the Soviet Union, he has to know how the nation came into being and the leaders, and the location of the country and the time period of its reign. How did the Soviet Union come into existence? Through the 1900ââ¬â¢s the Soviet Union was entangled in a vast number of conflicts all because they wanted to spread communism. Subsequently, the rampant spread of communism and Soviet ideals had an impact in the First World War, Second World and Cold War. Under the authoritarian control of Russian leaders the budget for the military and various sectors clarifies that the Soviet Union in its existence failed. The Russian Empire began to disintegrate in 1917 starting with Theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦At a convention known as the ââ¬Å"Geneva Summit Meetingâ⬠these two men assented to the idea of Gorbachev that the utilization of strategic weapons be terminated. As a result, they met again in 1986 at Reykjavik, Iceland to finalize the reduction agreement but it did not succeed. Although Reagan complemented the plan, he complained because it would require a voluminous amount of money and it would be a failure. Gorbachev wanted to get the USSR back on its foot and he formulated reform known as perestroika, standing for ââ¬Å"restructuringâ⬠and a freer system of politics known as glasnost or ââ¬Å"opennessâ⬠. With this intention, the strength of the Soviets military expenditure had to cut. More importantly, Gorbachev and President Reagan signed a treaty banning terrestrial missiles in Europe known as the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty. Due to Gorbachevââ¬â ¢s agreement to weaken and withdraw Soviet troops from other countries, the USSR began to weaken. His alterations sparked revolutions from many people in East Germany, Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Romania in 1989. Above all, communism was coming to an end. In November 1989, the Berlin Wall of Germany which its construction was initiated Khrushchev of the Soviet Union was torn down.
